A GOOD TIME TO TURN TO GOD. BY JULIA ATTAWAY Posted in Power of Prayer. By 8:00 a.m. I was already thinking, “This is a bad day!” At 8:01 I corrected myself, saying, “No. Something didn’t go well. That means nothing about the rest of the day except that you need to re-set your attitude and emotions.” I took a few slow, deep breaths and thought of something for which to give thanks, and felt a bit better. Then at 8:04 the underground driver announced that there were delays due to a signal problem, and my stress level started to rise again. I pulled out my phone to use my morning prayer app. The opening sentence included “May we reflect your glory this day.” I frowned—it sure didn’t seem likely I was heading toward reflecting God’s glory, given the bumpy start I’d had already—but I prayed the phrase anyway. Then I prayed it for the people around me, prayed it for each of my kids, prayed it for each of the people I knew who were struggling. That helped re-set my spirit. Finally, around 8:15, the train began to move. By then a kid nearby was playing a game on his mum’s phone at high volume, someone holding on to an overhead bar was coughing down on me, and I was getting dire text messages from one of my teens. I read Psalm 42, “Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul, and why are you so disquieted within me? O put your trust in God, for I will yet give him thanks, who is the help of my countenance and my God” (Psalm 42:6-7). That reminded me again to think of things for which I was thankful, and I spent the rest of my commute giving thanks. The rest of the day was just as up-and-down. My email didn’t work, I found out one of my kids lied to me, the printer ran out of ink when I had to get something out the door—it was one aggravation after another. Even though none of it was life-shattering it all felt huge. Life seemed far more difficult than it had to be. But maybe it did have to be that way. As I left work I realized that several good things did happen: —I’d chosen to give thanks—many times—instead of grousing. —I’d asked the Lord to help me reflect His glory. —I’d opted to rebound each and every time I became frustrated, turning to God many times more often than I would have if everything had gone smoothly. That made me smile. And it kind of took the edge off the train delay on the way home.
YOUR WORDS ARE SPIRIT, LORD AND THEY ARE LIFE.

3 TIPS FOR BEATING THE JANUARY BLUES. Do you get that gosh-I-wish-it-were-still-Christmas feeling sometimes? Do you stare at a Christmas present and wish it were still under the tree waiting to be opened? Do you look up at the sky and wish that the sun would linger just a little longer? If so, you may have a case of the January blues. Here are three possible antidotes: 1) Pray through Christmas cards I’m always touched that anyone sends us a Christmas card, especially since we never send them ourselves. But there they sit, in a bowl, wondering when they’re going to be thrown out. Before you put them in the recycling bin, recycle a little of the joy they stand for. Take a card a day and put it in your pocket or purse or briefcase and remember that person, that family, those friends, that loved one. Hold a good thought for them. See how long the stack lasts. Maybe till Easter! 2) Be glad of the date Do you keep putting the wrong date on things? It takes me a week, two weeks, or a month before I put down 2019. I keep on putting down 2018. At least I can change that eight into a nine easily enough. It’ll be harder in 2020! Every time you stumble over the year, pause and give thanks for this year. We can’t redo what is past, and it’s no use worrying about what might happen in the future. Be here now. In this year, this God-given moment that we’re meant to savour. It’s 2019! 3) Find that puddle of sun In the middle of winter I’ve been known to stand at a bus stop and wait for a bus I have no intention of taking. Just because there was a sliver of sunlight to enjoy. Okay, the sun is not as strong as it is in the summer (and remember how devastatingly hot it can be in the summer), so when it comes out—and you might have to wait a day or two—savour it. Give thanks for that sun low on the horizon. It’s saying, “I’m coming up in the world. You might not know it yet, but the days are already getting longer. Change is on the horizon.” So look up. There’s always something to be grateful for. By Rick Hamliin.

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD. Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord. This brings to an end the season of Christmas. The Church recalls Our Lord's second manifestation or epiphany which occurred on the occasion of His baptism in the Jordan. Jesus descended into the River to sanctify its waters and to give them the power to beget sons of God. The event takes on the importance of a second creation in which the entire Trinity intervenes.
FUNNY STORY: A little boy was listening to a long and excessively boring sermon in church. Suddenly the red sanctuary lamp caught his eye. Tugging his father's sleeve, he said, "Daddy, when the light turns green can we go?"
PRAYER OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI: PRAYER FOR PEACE Lord, make me an instrument of your peace, Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy; O Divine Master, grant that I may seek not so much to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD. The Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God and Saviour of the world. the great feast of Epiphany celebrates the adoration of Jesus by the wise men (magi) from the East, together with his baptism in the Jordan and the wedding feast at Cana in Galilee. In the magi, representatives of the neighbouring pagan religions, the Gospel sees the first-fruits of the nations, who welcome the good news of salvation through the Incarnation. The magi's coming to Jerusalem in order to pay homage to the king of the Jews shows that they seek in Israel, in the messianic light of the star of David, the one who will be king of the nations. Their coming means that pagans can discover Jesus and worship him as Son of God and Saviour of the world only by turning towards the Jews and receiving from them the messianic promise as contained in the Old Testament. The Epiphany shows that “the full number of the nations” now takes its “place in the family of the patriarchs”, and acquires Israelitica dignitas (is made “worthy of the heritage of Israel”).
