Why Do We Call It Lent?  Think of the 40 days preparing for Easter as something precious and to be celebrated, days lent to us–lent by God.   We’re deep into Lent–the 40 days leading up to Easter, historically a time of fasting and prayer, getting ready for the celebration of the Resurrection.  The word “Lent” comes from the old English “lencten,” which means spring. This is the early spring–and if your area is anything like mine, the crocuses are pushing up through the earth, a sure sign that spring is on the way.  The early Christians celebrated baptism at Easter and so they would dedicate the weeks beforehand as a time to prepare, to be reconciled to God by a period of penitence and fasting.  At first it was just a few weeks and then it became the 40 days that we know today–and remember that’s 40 not counting the Sundays which are technically feast days and not fast days.  So Lent was a description of the time of year this was all happening, spring coming to the earth as renewal was making its way to us.  But let me try out another felicitous way of thinking of the word “Lent.”  Lent, as in lending something to someone, letting them have it because it’s yours to loan.  Sometimes you’ll hear the phrase, “borrowed time,” as in “He’s living on borrowed time.” But recently I read how in the 18th century a different expression was used. They would say “lent time.”  It’s a switch in emphasis. “Borrowed time” focuses on us and our notion of controlling our future. “Lent time” puts the emphasis back on God. Every moment is precious, every moment is lent by the divine. Think of these precious days as something to be celebrated because they have been lent to us, lent by the greatest of all.  The Bible says, “You are dust and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19), a phrase that we repeat at Lent, a reminder of our mortality. We are lent to the earth, lent to a life of joy and sorrow, lent to a life of love because we are loved. Happy Lent. By Rick Hamlin.

WHAT GOD SEES WHEN YOU'RE A HOT MESS EVEN WHEN WE TRY TO HIDE OUR MISTAKES AND MISSTEPS FROM OTHERS, GOD SEES ALL. AND STILL OFFERS LOVE. (by Michelle Cox). The social media webinar sounded intriguing, and since I didn’t have time to go to class, the fact that I could take it online made it extra attractive. I was on a tight book deadline at the time, having spent the day with my fingers glued to my keyboard. Frantically trying to make a deadline, I was still in pajamas with just barely combed my hair and, of course, no make-up, except for mascara smudges from rubbing my eyes. (Next time you think a writer’s life is glamorous...) I looked rough. Rough! At the appointed time for the webinar, I logged on. The content was as awesome as I’d anticipated, and it would be so helpful for what I do. But 15 minutes into the live webcast, I looked at the beautiful and perfectly groomed hosts. My weary brain clicked and in a moment of epic panic, I muttered, “Please tell me they can’t see me on this webinar!”

What made it worse was that the hosts were good friends. But there was a ray of hope: I looked so bad that maybe they wouldn’t recognize me! Then my brain kicked into higher gear, and I remembered from hosting my own webinars that just the hosts are shown. However, just to be on the safe side, I spent the rest of the webinar with the camera on my computer covered up so there was no chance of my being seen. Our lives are much the same way. Sometimes there are things about us that we don’t want others to see. Maybe it’s something we’ve done wrong that we want to keep hidden. Maybe it’s heartache and scars from our past that nobody knows about. Maybe we just don’t want the world to know that we’re a complete mess…at least in our own eyes.  But God sees. Nothing is hidden from Him. He sees when we do wrong, and it hurts Him because He wants better for us. He sees our heartaches, and it hurts Him because He loves us.

He sees our scars from the past. He knows the circumstances that put them there—but He also sees the big picture, and He knows that none of our life experiences go to waste—that He can use all those moments for His glory.

He sees our insecurities and how we often belittle ourselves—and that bothers Him because when He looks at us, He sees His beloved child.

I’m so grateful for a God who truly sees me—even when I’m a hot mess—and that He always loves me. Yes, even when I’m in my pajamas with half-combed hair and mascara-smudged eyes.

“Your thoughtfulness is a gift I will always treasure”. Together we have journeyed, cried, laughed and celebrated. I shall never forget these. I shall never forget the love, kindness and support which you have shown me, and of course your tolerance and forgiveness of my many imperfections in the short time we have been together. You have helped me become a better man and a better Priest. I praise and thank God for the privilege of journey in faith with you.  I thank you for your support in my priestly ministry. I truly appreciate all the lovely cards with beautiful words and the thoughtful gifts.  May God bless you with his love and goodness. You will always hold a warm spot in my heart. I will miss you very much. To Fr. Kevin and to all who minister, your service and mentoring is truly appreciated and valued.  To all parishioners, thank you.   It’s goodbye for now, but we will meet again.  You will be remembered in my prayers and I beg you to remember me in yours.  I leave you and I love you.  May God bless us! “I thank God each time I think of you, and when I pray for you, I pray with joy.” (Philippians 1:3)

Fr Angelo Lafferty SMA

DIOCESE OF BRENTWOOD. Do you support Catholic schools and the right of Catholics to send their children to them? Then we need you to make your voice heard. The Government is making a critical decision on whether to overturn the admissions cap which prevents Catholic schools from allowing all Catholic pupils attend. They have acknowledged that this policy discriminates against Catholics and promised to abandon it, now we need to tell them not to u-turn on their promise to Catholics. Visit http://catholicnews.org.uk/education-cap  or research for “Catholic Education” in your search engine to write to the Government and urge them to drop their policy which bans new Catholic schools.
